Saint John Passion: An Eastertide Oratorio
This highly controversial work is one of Johan Sebastian Bachs most unusual creations. The text is based on Books 18 and 19 of the Lutheran Bible, with some additional texts.
The work will be performed by the MusicaNova Orchestra and Chorus. Featured roles include Jesus, and Pontius Pilate, and the Evangelist, who narrates the oratorio. The orchestra includes a lute, viola d'amore and viola da gamba to recreate the sound heard in Bach's day.
The intricate Choruses will be sung by our professional choir, and the hymn-like Chorales, with the audience invited to join in.
The Passion is controversial because it is based on Gospel source widely regarded as anti-semitic. This is an issue we will explore in a pre-concert discussion led by Dr. Bruce Johnson and MNO Music Director Warren Cohen.
